SERVING AMERICA'S RURAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROFESSIONALS

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation works with the state’s eight regional development organizations and fourteen metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) to establish a coordinated approach to local, regional and statewide transportation planning.

The regional development organizations (known locally as regional planning commissions or RPCs), serve all but six counties in the state and were formed by executive order of the governor in 1970. RPCs may provide such services to their regions as: comprehensive community plans, zoning and subdivision ordinances, grant writing, geographic information system map production, economic development planning and socio-economic data collection and dissemination.

The Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, serving five counties in the corner of the state, completes a variety of transportation planning tasks. These include staffing three rail transit commissions, which include active rail corridors as well as converted recreational trails. The Commission also staffs the Mississippi River Parkway Commission, a local scenic byway, and produces a range of studies and reports.
