SERVING AMERICA'S RURAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROFESSIONALS

Rural Intelligent Transportation Systems

The NADO Research Foundation promotes regional development organizations’ involvement in activities related to intelligent transportation systems (ITS). ITS projects use information or communications technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of transportation systems. A variety of applications for ITS exist, such as improving safety, emergency preparedness, traffic flow, travel information, mobility services or operations and maintenance.

Through a cooperative agreement with the Federal Highway Administration, the Research Foundation has reported on regional development organizations’ ITS activities in NADO publications, including the Regional Development Digest and the former Regional Transportation Connector. The Research Foundation has also gathered ITS-related resources and made them accessible to NADO members and transportation stakeholders throughout the country. The NADO Research Foundation participates in the ITS National Association Working Group (a subsidiary of the National Transportation Operations Coalition), which focuses on spreading the word about the importance of ITS and transportation operations.

The articles and Web sites available here will serve as useful resources to visitors looking for the latest information and advances in Intelligent Transportation Systems technology.
