TRB Releases Transportation Project Economic Impact Tool

TRB has developed a web-based database of case studies that show the economic impacts of already-built projects as a comparative tool for planners.

The Transportation Research Board’s Strategic Highway Research Program has developed a new web tool for assessing the economic impact of transportation projects. The Transportation Project Impact Case Studies (T-PICS) Web Tool contains 100 case studies where pre-/post-construction data demonstrate the range of actual economic impacts that were observed from already-built projects.

This tool is expected to help transportation planners, economic development professionals, policymakers and stakeholders estimate the possible economic impacts of proposed new projects in their region by comparing their projects to already built projects described in the database. Although the web tool is not predictive like some forecasting software, it does provide users with a practical way to estimate potential impacts from their projects.

Although it contains 100 case studies, the tool is still considered a draft, as more case studies and more modes than highways will ultimately be added to the tool. For more information, visit www.tpics.us.
